Why does my cat make noises at night? I want to Sleep!

“Even with your head buried under the pillow, this meow can sound like an airplane taking off. The cat will try to be a rooster until you show signs of waking up to give him attention or food. For what? Perhaps his internal hunting clock was set to tickle early in the morning.

It's not uncommon for Cat Behavior Clinic clients to tell me they haven't had a good night's sleep in years. Their cat always wakes them up during their sleep by meowing at night, especially between 3 am and 5 am. This common feline behavior may be due to the cat's natural instincts, other playful factors, or both.

Some breeds of cats are more talkative than others and the nature of the breed can also cause sleep disturbances. A good night's sleep has become a thing of the past for many cat owners and they are happy to sleep even four hours a night. Some of my clients have fallen asleep while driving to work in the morning because they didn't sleep well!

  • * Changes in the environment (for example, you moved to a new house and the light comes out of the window in the morning more than in your old house, which wakes up your cat earlier).
  • *You have reinforced the nocturnal behavior by giving your cat attention, which can prolong the behavior once it starts.
  • * Health problems may be at play, especially if the behavior appears suddenly without a change in the cat's environment.

What do you do to make your cat sleep at night and in the morning?

1.. Food later in the evening:

If you feed your cat on a regular schedule during the day, be sure to give him the last meal of the day a few hours later in the evening. Or, for example, you can divide the last meal of your cat into two parts, given at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. and the last part was given at 10 p.m. This can help your cat feel full throughout the night and into the morning.

2..Make your cat more alert during the day:

Enlist the help of a licensed cat feeder to feed your cat several times a day. Spreading out meals every few hours can help your cat stay alert during the day. No cat should go several hours between meals during the day. There are seasonal feeders available for dry and canned cat food.

Adding a food supplement to the daily diet (Aikiou's Stimulo is my favorite) is also another option to help your cat stay awake during the day. He will have to work to get the food, and it will take longer than eating it from a plate. Simply put, if your cat is active and awake more hours during the day, he will sleep more hours at night and even later in the morning. And that means more sleep for you!

3..Reset your cat's internal clock:

Getting your cat to "hunt" (ie, play with toys) can be an important strategy for resetting the hunting clock to evening instead of morning. To reset it in the evening, use a toy (Playful Panther is my favorite) to play with your cat in the evening before bed. This plan may take several days before you start to see effects

4..Ignore the behavior:

Once the meowing behavior begins, it is important not to reinforce this behavior by giving your cat any attention. If you do this, you may end up training your cat to meow even more and create a real problem. If your cat is used to getting a response from you when he makes a noise,

Once you stop distracting him for his annoying behavior, he will try twice as hard to get your attention. This is callers an extinctions bursts or this “it get worse's be fores it get betters” phenomenon. Be patient. This may last for a few weeks, but continue to ignore the behavior regardless of what needs to be improved.
